Cannons Volunteer wins State Award

Christy Kesler, a volunteer at Cannons Elementary School in Spartanburg School District Three, has been recognized for her contributions to South Carolina's public education system. Kesler is joined by 18 other individuals and/or organizations across the state.

The State Board of Education honored Kesler on Tuesday, November 17 at the River Center at Saluda Shoals Park.

"These honorees deserve special recognition because of the many constructive ways they affect students' lives," said State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex. "Each of their stories is an inspirational illustration of how adults can work with students to create positive momentum toward success in school.

Karen Grimm, principal at Cannons Elementary School said, "Mrs. Kesler has a servant's heart, an enthusiastic disposition, and a cheerful smile. She is eager to help students, parents, and teachers in any way possible."

The annual Volunteer Awards are authorized by the Education Improvement Act of 1984 and are designed to salute the time, energy and talents that volunteers contribute to South Carolina schools.

Criteria for selection include promoting student achievement, enhancing school-community relations, strengthening school or district resources, encouraging a positive climate and promoting teacher effectiveness.
